Meet Sue Potts, CNM, Founder & Lead Midwife

Sue Potts
Certified Nurse Midwife
My name is Sue. I am a registered nurse and a certified nurse-midwife. I have been a nurse for over 28 years and a midwife for the past five. My path to midwifery started long before I ever returned to school. While I was in nursing school in the 1990s, I first learned about out-of-hospital midwifery care, and it has stayed in the back of my mind for years.
When I became pregnant with my first child in 1999, I searched the Yellow Pages for a midwife and was fortunate enough to find Cathy Rude. She became my midwife for all four of my pregnancies and home births. After my first birth, I knew in my bones that midwifery was what I was meant to do. At that point in my life, though, I had young children and was working full-time as a nurse, so returning to school was not realistic. Even so, that calling never left me. I supported friends through their births, talked endlessly about pregnancy, babies, and breastfeeding, and stayed connected to the birth world however I could.
As my children grew older, I realized that going back to school was finally possible. I earned my Master of Science in Nursing in nurse midwifery from Texas Tech University and went on to work full-time as a CNM at Katy Birth Center until 2026, attending both birth center and home births. My children, now all adults, have always supported me in giving myself fully to my clients and to this work. Our home is a busy one, filled with three young adults, often another young person who needs a place to land for a while, three old dogs, and four cats. I love living in a house that feels as vibrant as the work I do.
I feel incredibly grateful that I get to care for pregnant women and attend births. Being invited into such an intimate and powerful time in someone’s life and becoming a small part of their family’s story is something I never take for granted.
Because birth is unpredictable by nature, I believe I will always be learning how to be a better midwife. My clients teach me just as much as I hope I offer them. I have experience attending twin births, breech births, and VBACs, and I am comfortable supporting those options when a parent chooses them and when I believe the decision is informed and safe.
What matters most to me is not where you give birth, but that you are receiving care in the safest place for you and your baby. If circumstances change and a higher level of care becomes necessary, I will be honest with you and help guide that transition. My priority is always your well-being and that of your baby.
I care deeply about education and informed choice. My role is to provide information and support, enabling parents to make decisions that align with their values and level of comfort with risk. When clients ask me what I would do in their place, I remind them that the risks they are comfortable with may not be the same as mine. Even when we trust someone deeply, their choices are not meant to be our blueprint for life. Decisions such as whether to give vitamin K by injection, use oral vitamin K, or decline it altogether are good examples. Each option carries risk, albeit different kinds.
Midwifery care asks more of parents than simply attending scheduled appointments. Our visits are designed to assess how things are going, offer guidance, and provide care; however, the way you live day to day has a far greater impact on your pregnancy and your baby than anything that happens during an office visit. In many ways, your daily life is a form of prenatal care.
While there are no guarantees in birth, my hope is to empower you to give birth in the way that feels right to you and to increase the likelihood of the best possible outcome for you and your baby. If complications arise, I want you to be able to move forward knowing you were informed, supported, and engaged in your care, and that you did everything within your power along the way.
Care That Centers Your Story
Whether we’re listening to your baby’s heartbeat during prenatal care, preparing for the moment you’ll meet your baby on your birth day, or sharing a quiet conversation in the postpartum weeks, my hope is that you always feel valued, nurtured, empowered, safe and seen.
You are not just receiving clinical care—you are entering a space where your story matters, your choices matter, and your intuition is honored.
Holistic, Evidence-Based, Heart-Centered
While my care is deeply relational, it is also grounded in evidence-based midwifery, collaboration, and access to trusted specialists when needed.
Families may receive referrals to: maternal fetal medicine, lactation consultants, chiropractors, pelvic floor therapists, and pediatric dentists.
This ensures you and your baby are supported in every way, with a circle of care extending beyond a single provider.
